What Are Drainage Swales?
A drainage swale or swale drain is a man-made depression in the ground that’s designed to direct water flow. This drainage solution is rather simple in concept and relatively easy and affordable to implement. Basic swales often look a lot like trenches, but it’s also possible to integrate a swale into your landscape. You can use attractive stones as a bed and line the depression with grass, rocks, vegetation, and so forth so that it looks a lot more like a dry river bed than a functional landscape. If you’ve ever driven on country roads, then you’ve likely seen swales that are often dug alongside them. In these scenarios, it’s common to have a pipe extend under the road and perhaps a manhole, and this feature is referred to as a culvert. Swales are often used with driveways in order to force them to drain properly, and a culvert may be needed in order to let water move from one side to the other.
Swale Installation
There really is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to a swale install. Our team will come out to your home or commercial location and perform a thorough inspection to identify your drainage problems and determine the swale design that is going to alleviate them in an efficient manner. The length and depth of the swale you need depend very much on the slope of your property and other factors. When it comes to foundation swales and the like, there are local building codes and recommendations, and we’ll adhere to those, and we’ll also adhere to all codes and requirements should your swale need to integrate into the municipal drainage system.
Swale Repair
Our team specializes in swale repair as well. We encourage homeowners and commercial property owners to inspect their drainage swales on a monthly basis. Perform routine maintenance as needed, and if you have a landscaping company, that can be done by them. It’s also a good idea to have AWS professionally inspect your swale once a year to make sure that the swale is still sound and to recommend preventative repairs if necessary. Most repairs are minor, but we can perform more extensive repairs as well, such as deepening the ditch or adding a culvert.
Culvert Pipe Installation
When we plan your swale install, we can include a culvert pipe as well. Culverts are commonly installed with driveways in order to allow water to flow freely through the swale. Installing a culvert pipe is often more complex than installing a basic swale. There are strict building codes that must be followed. The tube, for instance, will have to meet minimum diameter and length requirements. It’s also necessary to contact all relevant utility companies and ensure that any digging required won’t interfere with their cables and other resources. Our team has extensive experience coordinating such projects, and we have all the equipment needed to install your culvert pipe quickly and with precision. If you already have a culvert and it has become worn with time, we also provide culvert repair services and can bring your culvert back up to code and restore it to like-new condition.
